We all know that Perugia is an ancient city: Etruscan, Roman, mediaeval … but it is also notable that the development of the city includes Corso Cavour and Borgo XX giugno. What event makes 20 June an historic date?
On 20 June, 1859, in Perugia at the height of the Risorgimento, the Pontifical troops of Pope Pius IX attacked the citizens who had rebelled against the rule of the Papal States. The regiments of the Swiss Guard sent by Rome arrived in the city where they found about a thousand people poorly armed and badly organised who nevertheless had decided to defend themselves against pontifical repression.
The fighting took place at Porta San Pietro and was both bitter and courageous; nevertheless, the resistance of the Perugini was shattered by the Papal soldiers who killed about thirty of the insurgents, massacred civilians and sacked the city.
On the fiftieth anniversary of the event in 1909, a monument was constructed to the memory of the fallen of the 20th of June and the entire neighbourhood of Porta San Pietro was renamed Borgo XX giugno, also known as Borgo bello.
Therefore today, from the Giardini del Frontone, we can admire the splendid Basilica di San Pietro and catch a glimpse of the orto medievale (mediaeval kitchen garden) that lies within the competence of the church, while keeping firmly in mind, though, that the symbolic strength of the district is above all in its name, a reminder of the struggle that the people of Perugia sustained to become part of a united Italy.
